Converting from Generator to Alternator

Postby groundhog180 » Sat Jun 14, 2008 9:39 pm

Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone here has converted from generator to Alternator? Although it was on my 58' Olds that the Generator died this evening, it is the same type and hook-up as the Buick. I may have enough parts to put another one together, but still contemplate a conversion.

If someone here has the time to explain the procedure it may be beneficial to all.

Thanks......Lee G.

Here is a link to a 1 wire alternator conversion for a 58 buick. (See diagram on webpage). I am planning to use this a starting point. We'll see how it turns out. ... rnator.htm

If authenticity is a factor, the generator can be converted to an alternator so that you can keep the original look in the engine compartment. There is information in this thread in the Modernizing section:
1958 Buick Limited Riviera Coupe Model 755

Other cars:
1953 Chevrolet 3100 Pickup
1957 Pontiac Transcontinental Safari
1968 Ford Galaxie 500 HT
1977 Lincoln Continental Convertible
