Post by ceejay »

Hi guys,

The 58 Century has a lot of stainless shiny bits right ?

Should these be buffed or chromium plated ?

There are several types of metal on the car. Stainless steel parts should be polished/buffed. All of the parts like the taillight bezels and bumpers should be chromed. And even a few pieces on the rear bumpers are stainless steel.

This is a full size bumper, I'm not sure if the Special/Century bumpers have these 3 pieces..

a little bit at a time, right ceejay?

interesting... Smartin, comparing our two bumper photos, your striped center inserts on your bumper do look stainless, however, mine clearly are not (notice the rust-through on the lower corners). does anyone else know about these? were the 'big series' cars equipped with stainless but the 'small series' not? mid-run production change? aftermarket upgrade? just thinking out loud...

I'm not sure...I'll have to look at mine closer. I had just assumed they were stainless.

Here is an auction for a rear bumper for the Special/Century, and it looks clear that they're stainless...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1958-Bui ... ccessories

I stuck a magnet on mine, but there is a steel backing plate that these are matted to, so it stuck.

Can you get a closer shot of the rust-through on yours?

One thing to note: on Roadmasters and Limiteds, a lot of the "stainless" such as the windshield revel moldings are actually chrome plated.

hi guys, sorry about the delay, i was out of town for the past week.

58limited, about the 'stainless' on the big-series cars that is actually chrome--is it stainless that is chrome plated or is it just regular chrome?

and Smartin, clearly the bumper fill panels on that ebay auction are indeed stainless! too bad mine dont look like that. enclosed are photos, one has a photo of the license plate frame (obviously stainless), which has no rust...
